If Alpha does not recognize a specific mode when it opens a file, the default mode is Text mode. It has no syntax coloring but provides basic text preferences: click here to display the Text Mode Preferences.
The current mode of a document window is indicated in the Mode popup (🄼) located in the control bar. This button is a pop-up menu, allowing you to change the mode of the current window.
