Alpha Q&A #005
How to do spell checking with Alpha ?

Question

How to do spell checking with Alpha ?

Answer

Alpha provides different ways of performing spell checking on a document. The functionalities are found in the Edit ↣ Spelling menu.
When you use one of the spell checking commands for the first time, you are asked to select a spell checking service. Currently there are two choices:
Alpha
This is Alpha's built-in spell checker which relies on the OS X spelling facilities and dictionaries.
Aspell
This service is based on the Unix program aspell.
With both services, the interaction between the text and the spell checker takes place in a Spelling Panel which displays the misspelled words and suggests corrections.
If you choose the external solution (Aspell), the corresponding program must be installed on your machine.
The Alpha and Aspell services allow you to specify a particular language: there is a Dictionaries submenu in the Edit ↣ Spelling menu with all the dictionaries currently available on your machine. Note that Alpha and aspell each have their own set of dictionaries, so the list of dictionaries found in the Dictionaries submenu differs depending on which service is currently selected.

How do I change the spell checker ?

The easiest way to change the spell checker is to use the menu item Edit ↣ Spelling ↣ Select Spelling Service.
Select Spell Checker Menu Item
Alternatively, you can select the Alpha ↣ Global Setup ↣ Helper Applications menu item, select the Miscellaneous panel, find the Spellcheck Services section and click on the corresponding arrow to choose another service.
Spellcheck Helper Application
Click here to display the Helper-Applications Preferences panel.

Smart spell checking

Both spell checkers are "smart". This means that they (automatically) adapt themselves to the mode of the document and in particular are clever enough to spell check (La)TeX documents without being disturbed by the TeX markup (macros, environments, etc.).
Similarly, in HTML and XML documents, the spell checkers will not be misled by the tags and attributes of the markup language.
