Introduction

Most of the modes have their own coloring policy. This is a set of coloring rules known as color schemes. Most of the schemes are exposed via mode preferences: this means that, when Alpha is in a particular mode (like TeX mode, HTML mode, etc.), the corresponding mode preferences let you customize, if you are not satisfied with the default settings, the colors used by the mode. Mode preferences are accessed through the Alpha ↣ Mode Setup ↣ Preferences menu item.
There are usually preferences to colorize keywords, or comments, or strings, or any aspect of the mode's syntax. For instance, TeX mode supports the following preferences:

Selection of a color preference is done (in the preferences dialogs) via a popup menu containing all the color names known to Alpha. Alpha comes with a rich list of 657 predefined colors but you can also define your own colors as explained in the next sections.

User-defined colors

You can also define your own colors if necessary. User-defined colors (aka custom colors) are declared using the Alpha ↣ Preferences ↣ Color Definitions ↣ New Custom Color menu item. You are first asked to give a name to the new color, then a color picker is displayed to let you choose the color itself.
Custom colors are listed in the popup menus for color preferences in a separate section before the predefined colors. They are recorded between sessions.
A custom color may be removed using the Alpha ↣ Preferences ↣ Color Definitions ↣ Delete Custom Color menu item.

Foreground/background colors

The Foreground Color and Background Color global preferences let you define the colors used when a new document window is opened. The Background Color is the color used to fill the contents area of the window (white by default). The Foreground Color is the color used to print the portions of the text which are not otherwise colored by mode-specific coloring schemes (black by default).
You can modify these colors in the Appearance Preferences panel or alternatively via the Alpha ↣ Preferences ↣ Color Definitions ↣ Foreground Color and Alpha ↣ Preferences ↣ Color Definitions ↣ Background Color menu items.

Note to developers

The list of colors can be obtained programmatically with the command [colorRef names].
All colors are identified with a color token obtained programmatically by the [colorRef crate] command.
